PIANO LESSONS

Lessons at Panorama Piano are available for students ages 6 to adult and include all levels from beginner to diploma. Your annual tuition fee typically includes:

• Private lessons using a traditional approach

• Exam and music festival preparation (participation in these is your choice)

• Masterclasses

• Christmas and Year-End Recitals

• Opportunities for other performances

MASTERCLASSES

Masterclasses are an opportunity for a few students to gather and perform for each other. Students learn to handle nerves and to practice performing before an event. They typically take place on a few Friday/Saturday afternoons throughout the year. The youngest students learn performance etiquette, and all ages are coached on the art of listening to music performances. Students learn to give positive and helpful feedback to their peers.

RECITALS

Christmas and Spring recitals are highlights of the musical year. I rent a larger venue (a church) with a good grand piano and more than enough space to invite all the friends and relatives you would like.

OTHER PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITIES

Other performance opportunities include exams, the APTA festivalContemporary Showcase Calgarystudent recitals hosted by a group of teachers to which I belong, and duets. Duets are a fabulous way to have fun making music with another student. A whole new skill set is learned and much enjoyment results. These opportunities are all optional.

THEORY LESSONS

Rudiments are taught as part of the lesson up to level/grade 8. Theory at all levels is taught using an ear-based approach. Starting with level 9, students begin learning Harmony and History which are co-requisites for their level certificate. Harmony is taught in separate lessons. I relate all theory concepts to the pieces the students are working on, enabling them to understand their repertoire on a deeper level.

When I was a teen learning Harmony for the first time, I didn’t understand why I had to do things the way I was told. When I first learned Music History, I memorized without having a clue how to relate it to music. Since then, I’ve taken courses, attended workshops, read many books and periodicals, and have had coffee chats with other teachers to learn how to be the best theory teacher I can be. It’s very rewarding to help my students connect the dots between history, harmony, and the actual pieces they are playing!

Lessons for the Advanced Theory subjects are limited to my own piano students. Lessons are based on the RCM books, Essential Music Theory books,  plus other supplemental material, including my own.

I am available as a consultant for other harmony teachers, either in person or online.
